If you just said to yourself, or SANG to yourself “or rewrite history”, then this is the place for you!

Disney’s Ducktales debuted on September 18, 1987 on local broadcast television (KPTV12 at 3pm in my neighborhood) as the forerunner of The Disney Afternoon, a two hour block that would premiere in 1988.  Starring Scrooge McDuck and his grandnephews Hewey, Dewey and Louie, would often embark on adventures throughout Duckberg and the rest of the world.

Since no adventure would be complete without an animated villain being in the way, Scrooge, the richest duck in the world, and his grandnephews, who were staying with Scrooge while Uncle Donald was away in the navy, would encounter the likes of the Beagle Boys and their matron, Ma Beagle, who greedily wanted to steal Scrooge’s wealth for themselves.  As well, they encountered the likes of Flintheart Glomgold who was the world’s second richest duck and wanted to have top billing, and also the evil sorceress Magica de Spell, whom needed Scrooge’s Number One Dime to complete any of her magical spells, which would make the holder of the Number One Dime as the richest duck in the world.

In order to travel the world, enter Scrooge’s personal pilot, Launchpad McQuack.  Perhaps not the most capable pilot in Duckberg, Launchpad’s motto is “if it’s got wings, I can crash it!”  Nonetheless, all his passengers are able to defeat the villain du jour with their wit and the Handy Dandy Junior Woodchuck’s Guidebook.  Aside from his leather pilot’s jacket, Launchpad McQuack is also able to add spinoff to his resume, as he also appeared in Darkwing Duck as the title character’s trusted sidekick.

Disney’s Ducktales  aired until November 28, 1990, lasting exactly 100 episodes. It also had a feature length animated film, Ducktales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, debuting on August 3, 1990, and a video game, Ducktales, released on Nintendo by Capcom.  Currently, Ducktales is available on DVD and also on Amazon Instant Video.  Capcom is releasing Ducktales Remastered later this summer.

Unfortunately, as its available for purchase only, the series is not available to the general public on broadcast television of any sort.  I have mentioned before a desire to see a Vault Disney channel created by the Disney Company, and a place for Ducktales and The Disney Afternoon should be reserved as part of the regular broadcasting block.
