News and Notes, This and That

Welcome, and thanks again for taking time my thoughts and ramblings.

Today, I have some housekeeping to address instead of dropping some general Disney knowledge.  As many of you have noticed, my postings have dropped from once a day to once every few days while I was on vacation. (more…)

My Favorite Disneyland Attractions Is…

Hello, and welcome to my Disney thoughts.  I appreciate you taking a few moments of your day to read my thoughts and ramblings.

I’m stepping out of my traditional subject of Vault Disney, in that I’m not looking at Disney television shows that are no longer available to watch on television. I’m also not going to be pushing Disney to create a separate channel for classic Disney shows like Wonderful World of Disney or Mickey Mouse Club.  Today, I want to focus on one of my pseudo-pet peeves.

It’s a question I get asked anytime I start talking about Disneyland: What’s your favorite ride at Disneyland?

The answer is:   (more…)

Welcome to Pooh Corner

One of the original shows of The Disney Channel, the first live action Winnie the Pooh show debuted the day the Disney Channel launched on April 18, 1983.  The show debuted at 7 am EST, making it the first program to air on The Disney Channel.

Disney Archivist Dave Smith described the show as performers in costumes and masks in storybook a settings.  The show used a technique described as “advanced puppetronics.”

The half hour time-blocked show would consist of (more…)

I Want My D-TV

Welcome back, and thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts.

Dtv

In 1984, a year after the premiere of The Disney Channel, D-TV was introduced as a five minute short between standard evening programming.  Playing off of MTV music videos, D-TV was a classic oldie song mixed with Disney animation. (more…)

This is a VHS.  But I digress.  It’s movie night!  Before Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, it was a trip to the mom and pop shop to rent a movie,  and you were really never sure what you would get. (more…)

In Line for a View

Hello, and thanks for stopping by! Today I want to focus on one of the shortest-lived, and long forgotten attractions at Disneyland, the Viewliner.

Image

On June 26, 1957, the Viewliner train began operating on two tracks inside Disneyland.  The lines were known as “the fastest miniature train in the world” and had single-circuit stations in Fantasyland and in Tomorrowland.   (more…)

Disney’s Michael Jackson Tribute

Hello, and thanks for stopping by again.  This is  place where I look back at the way Disney was in the past, how how it could look in the future.  My goal is to focus on broadcast shows, park attractions and the people who helped shape both.

On September 18. 1986 Captain EO opened at Disneyland inside Tomorrowland in the Magic Eye Theater.  It starred Michael Jackson in the title role, with (more…)

Remembrances again and Honorings

Welcome back, and I thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts and ramblings.

As June 24 winds to a close, there are two occasions I want to recognize related to today. (more…)

Dear Disney Programming

Hello, and thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts again today.  Instead of Disney history today, a quick look at the process that inspired this blog.  Last week I engaged on a Twitter discussion with some friends regarding Disney programming, which spawned this blog entry: http://confessionsofadisnerd.com/2013/06/21/lock-me-in-the-vault/

I posted a comment on that feed, which I also emailed directly to the Disney Company.  Below are the comments I posted on Friday, as well as (more…)

Audio-Animatronics Advancements and Archival Acheivements (Alliteration, an awesome aide)

Adventureland, June 23, 1963: Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room opened at Disneyland.

Significant for several reasons, the first being this is being written on the 50th anniversary of the opening.  Secondly, this is the first attraction in Disneyland to use Audio-Animatronics, created by Disney’s Imagineering department.   (more…)
