Recently, The Walt Disney Company held its 2019 Shareholders meeting in St. Louis, Missouri. During this meeting, CEO Bob Iger made several comments about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World parks. He also gave encouraging information about the new Disney+ streaming service.
Both topics have an impact on this site, as it pertains to Disneyland Park and the Disney Vault. What does it all mean? Let’s break it down bit by bit. If there are more questions you have, please leave a comment below on in the Facebook group (it’s easy to join!) and I’ll address them in a future post.
When will Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge open?
It depends. Iger did confirm opening dates for both parks, May 31 for Disneyland and August 29 for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. However, there’s a caveat. Only one attraction, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run will be open on opening day. The second attraction, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will not open until “later this year.” Stores, restaurants and cantinas will be open during the first phase of the opening.
How long will the lines be to enter the new area?
Again, it depends. Recent history of new, highly anticipated areas have seen huge crowd swells. It wasn’t unheard of to have guests wait for hours to enter the Magical World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios (Orlando and Hollywood). The same was true for Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios last year, and at Disney’s Animal Kingdom when Pandora – The World of Avatar opened in 2017.
Disneyland plans to combat this by requiring “free reservations” to enter the area. Details for this plan have not been announced by Disney, so stay tuned (or consult your travel agent). Walt Disney World is not planning for a reservation system currently. Again, this could change as the opening date gets closer.
What’s Disney+?
Disney+ is a new digital streaming service that is launching this year, although a launch date hasn’t been announced.

How much is it?
Pricing for Disney+ has yet to be announce. With each announcement of expected content, the price appears to be climbing higher and higher.
What content have they announced?
Content will include Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilms, and National Geographic (once the acquisition from Fox is complete). At the Disney Shareholder Meeting, Iger added “Shortly after launch, (Disney+) will house the entire Disney motion picture library.”
The entire library? Even Song of the South?
I doubt it. A shareholder meeting with exciting updates can be compared to a pep rally of sorts, and it’s most likely Iger said “entire” instead of a phrase such as “most of” to excite the crowd and public. Many websites have referred to this announcement as “opening” or “emptying the vault.” As much as I like this concept, let’s remember that the actual “vault” is really a marketing gimmick created by the company in the 1990s to sell VHS tapes for a limited release period. Specifically, the racial undertones of Song of the South make it difficult to envision it being released, although I still strong wish it would be.
What about early Disney Channel shows? Disney Afternoon cartoons?
That’s the dream I have – those two categories were the part original thesis for this site (along with the original Walt-hosted Wonderful World of Disney). I would LOVE to see them released on the Disney+ platform. Without an official announcement from Disney, all we have are faith, trust and pixie dust. And a wallet just screaming to have its money taken out of it.
