Welcome back, and I thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts and ramblings.
As June 24 winds to a close, there are two occasions I want to recognize related to today.
First, I want to recognize Roy Disney, born 120 years ago today. Roy was Walt’s older brother and is considered to be one of Walt’s greatest advisers . Roy would handle much of the negotiations and financial arrangements for Walt’s endeavors. It was also Roy who oversaw the construction of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida following Walt’s passing in 1966.
Roy passed away on December 20, 1971, two months after Walt Disney World opened its gates to the public.
Also on June 24, 2013, Disney Studios honored one of there own, Annette Funicello, by renaming Mouseketeer Stage Annette Funicello Stage. This is the stage where the original Mickey Mouse Club was taped.
Funicello was one of the original Mouseketeers, as well as one of America’s first sweethearts, whom ever girl wanted to be friends with and every guy wanted to date.
Annette died on April 8 of this year after a long battle with MS. I am very pleased with the tribute given to Funicello today, as she is now only the second person, along with Julie Andrews, to have a stage named in her honor by Disney Studios. Along with The Mickey Mouse Club, she appeared in numerous Disney films. Most of these films are currently not available for public viewing, as they are secured in the Disney Archives.
I personally wish I was able to see the episodes of They MIckey Mouse Club in which she appeared, and wish they would again be released on DVD and Blu-Ray to the general public. Of course, the same is true for many films, from The Shaggy Dog to Lots of Luck.
